Startup Ecosystem Support – how states rank?

Startup Ecosystem Support – how states rank?

Gujarat and Karnataka – best performer among states, Meghalaya – best performer among UTs and NE states

The government entities provide a lot of support to the startup ecosystem. The “Rankings of States” and the “National Startup Report” have been released recently by Shri Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Textiles. Some of the key findings –

  • Gujarat and Karnataka – best performers among states with population > 1Cr, Meghalaya – best performer among UTs and states with population < 1Cr.
  • with ONDC’s support (Open Network for Digital Commerce) there will be democratization of e-commerce in India like the democratization of digital payments through the UPI initiative. They expect that many ‘smaller’ companies will be created (1000s startups/unicorns) instead of a few ‘very big’ companies (three $100B or $1T).
  • more startups will join the government’s e-commerce marketplace (GeM).
  • Government initiatives like JAM (Jandhan, Aadhar, Mobile), Digital India, Gatishakti, Ease of Doing Business were driving the startup ecosystem.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has been conducting the states’ Start-up Ranking Exercise since 2018 to facilitate the ease of building a start-up and doing business across the country.
